A kite day is a “lesson in a box”. From exploring why autumn winds are the best for kite-fl ying (and other interesting science and weather-related facts) or even for design and technology lessons, kite days work because they are something that even children with the shortest attention span wants to do.
Kites for Schools have the perfect solution to school kite days. Everything is in the box – right down to the hole punch and sticky tape. Twenty minutes is all that is needed to get the kites made and the children outdoors. And our kites are even better than before – they still fl y in almost no wind, they still fl y in the rain, but now they can fl y in stronger winds. Costing from 99p (plus VAT) per child, every kite is guaranteed to fl y. Schools can order a free sample of the kite kit by following the links on the Kites for Schools website.

Kids across the UK love to read with Bug Club because it offers so many great ways to enjoy their favourite characters and stories; from eBooks to readers, comics, photo novels, non-fi ction and more. That is why we’re excited to announce a project with Children’s Laureate Julia Donaldson to bring a range key stage 1 plays to Bug Club in 2013. Children love plays, which are a brilliant way of helping them read
fl uently and with expression. Read the play aloud, then swap the parts again and again until all six readers are confi dent with the new words. Then you can perform a rehearsed reading to the rest of the class. Coming soon are 36 short plays designed to improve reading fl uency and six plays for the whole class to perform and love, based on popular kids picture books.

With “Nature Defi cit Disorder” becoming more prominent in the public consciousness, schools, governments and charities have been studying the importance of outdoor learning for children. Children are being “starved” of natural environmental interaction and this is having a negative impact on their health, wellbeing and learning ability. The Learning Escape has released a report that takes the concept of
“Nature Defi cit Disorder” further and places an emphasis on the long- term benefi ts for the environment of learning a natural, outdoor space. The Outdoor Environment highlights the importance of children working with nature, for themselves and their surroundings, and how schools can promote environmental citizenship from a young age. Alongside the report, The Learning Escape has created an online
Resource Centre that provides staff and pupils with a range of lesson plans, activities and ideas to help improve environmental citizenship in a variety of schools and settings. The resources are designed to spark conversation in the classroom and to promote interaction with the outdoor environment. You can fi nd The Learning Escape report The Outdoor Environment online. You can also visit the Resource Centre to fi nd useful websites for promoting environmental citizenship alongside key stage 1 and 2 lesson plans and activities.

While climbing trees has never really gone out of fashion, Playtime by Fawns hopes to bring it into the 21st century with the launch of the Pick Up Sticks 3 climber. Part of the Playtime Essentials range, the Pick Up Sticks 3 is a complex arrangement of logs and ropes designed to offer challenge, enhance decisions-making skills, and promote confi dence within the three to six age range. This unit is a smaller version of the Pick Up Sticks 4 and 6, which have
been successfully installed in more than 70 sites around the UK. The latest addition to the range is the fi rst to incorporate a slide. With the addition of a slide the unit becomes more inclusive, encouraging those children who maybe lack a little confi dence to push themselves, safe in the knowledge that their decent will be aided by the slide. Playtime by Fawns create unique Playscapes for unique children and settings, providing the back drop for adventures and the opportunity to explore the world around them, experiencing new challenges in an environment free from unacceptable risk and hazards.
