Nathan G. ask: Dear Mr. Green,

What is the Smart Grid?

A collection of new technologies, some present and some on the immediate horizon, are collectively known as the “smart grid”. The concept is to have major electrical consumers, such as data centers, have true two way communication with the generation and transmission sources, so as to continuously monitor and modify demand. Your facility’s electrical usage, rather than being a static quantity, can be modified dynamically, like a hybrid electric car alternates between gas and electric based on a computer continuously monitoring environmental conditions. The emergent smart grid will save us money and increase our security. You can read an excellent treatment of this topic in Wikipedia’s article on electrical demand response.
