MOBILE GAMING HITS CONSOLES MAKERS WHERE IT HURTS

There appears to have been a dramatic change in exactly what type of games people are playing. Recently, research group NPD unveiled analysis indicating that mobile gamers now represent the majority of the overall gaming market (22%), a shift that could be attributed to the emergence of smartphones and tablet devices. What could be considered much more astonishing is that the research firm discovered an overall decline of 5% in the video gaming population. “Given the long lifecycles of the current consoles and the increasing installed base of smartphones and tablets, it’s not surprising to see a slight decline in the Core Gamer segment,” commented industry analysts at NPD Anita Frazier in a press release. That percentage drop represents the loss of nearly 12 million gamers, said NDP. While the console market may be falling and mobile games increasing, another key demographic is picking up. Digital gaming now represents 16% of the overall market. That’s up 4% from a previous report.

MOBILE BROADBAND SPEEDS TO BE MEASURED BY FCC

The FCC has further invested in broadband, announcing that it would began measuring mobile speeds in an effort to better inform consumers on just how fast connections are.The plan called “Measuring Mobile America” is considered the first of its kind to track mobile broadband on a national level in the U.S. and expands on the FCC’s current initiative that already measures other broadband-capable devices. To verify that the effort is legitimate, the Commission is working with some of the industry’s top providers including Verizon, AT&T and Sprint. “We know from experience: transparency on broadband speeds drives improvement in broadband speeds. Our ongoing Measuring Broadband America program has helped improve performance in wired broadband,” commented FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski via a statement made available on FCC.gov. Genachowski added that the measure would “empower consumers and encourage improvements in mobile networks and programs, benefitting millions of Americans.”
