Please note that, although many of our 1000-level modules are suitable for beginners, some modules, especially in Science, require several years of background study at high school. In addition, students who wish to study Honours-level modules should ensure that they have the requisite background knowledge – for most subjects this means prior study at university level.
Study Abroad Themes: students may be interested in our Study Abroad Themes which bring together modules from several subject areas and which offer our visiting students the opportunity to make connections across disciplines. The themes for 2012-2013 are: Scotland, Sustainability, Travel & Exploration, Science for Arts Majors and Unique to St Andrews. Details about these modules can be seen on the Collaborations & Study Abroad web pages (Offer & Entrant Information).
Teaching: Teaching at St Andrews varies from traditional lectures and tutorials at sub-honours level, to smaller seminars and tutorials at Honours level.
St Andrews students are expected to undertake their own unsupervised independent study outside of their lectures, tutorials and seminars. This allows students to research their subjects in greater depth and develops their analytical and problem-solving skills.
Assessment: Assessment varies across the Schools, but is usually in the form of assessed coursework and exams at the end of the semester. Information on assessments can be found in the Undergraduate Course Catalogue or in the Student Handbook:
www.st-andrews.ac.uk/studenthandbook
Credit transfer: St Andrews modules are credit rated which allows students to transfer credits to their home institution. Students should check with their home institution for further information about the conversion of St Andrews credits and grades.
