New windows boost old unit at state-of-the-art Pinderfields Hospital

T

he Ashton Centre is a dermatological unit at the new, £250m state-of-the- art Pinderfields Hospital in

Wakefield, Yorkshire. After years of patient use, the building was in need of a fresh new look to complement the rest of the modern hospital facilities, which were officially opened in 2011.

In addition to the unit looking tired and worn, Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust (the Trust) also knew it was failing to meet its energy efficiency targets, so a decision was made to undertake a multi- purpose refurbishment that would improve its overall look and performance. This was done by replacing the old, single glazed timber windows in the Ashton Centre with double glazed PVC-U windows, which were fabricated with profiles from Spectus Window Systems.

Capital project manager for the Trust,

Brendan O’Shea explains: “The Ashton Centre looked particularly shabby next to the newly renovated buildings and a refurb had been on the cards for a while. When we decided to go ahead, we were given a set budget and decided to invest it in replacement windows.” The Trust contracted Walter West Builders in Dewsbury to project manage the refurbishment which, in turn, instructed

Jade Windows, also from Dewsbury, to fabricate and install some 50 casement PVC-U windows at the Ashton Centre. Jade Windows replaced the original single glazed, timber profiles at the Ashton Centre with white PVC-U opening casement frames fabricated with Spectus’ Elite 70 bevelled profile. Following the original specification, floor to ceiling windows were fitted with a fixed, insulated PVC-U bottom panel and toughened, double glazed top unit. Following the refurbishment with its

new PVC-U windows, the Ashton Centre at Pinderfields Hospital integrates perfectly with its surroundings and there is a vast improvement to the unit’s comfort levels and energy efficiency. Brendan continues, “With our new, tight fitting, double glazed windows there are less drafts and the rooms are much warmer, making the Ashton Centre more comfortable for staff and patients alike. In addition, everybody is delighted with the way it looks – the PVC-U produces cleaner lines and the aesthetics are much improved. “Of course, a more energy efficient building means lower fuel bills, so we see the new windows as a fantastic long term investment. When pricing up the windows, we found PVC-U to be much more cost-

SDS wins stormwater contract for Twickenham Academy

eading provider of stormwater management solutions, SDS, has won the contract to provide the stormwater attenuation system for the new Twickenham Academy, a college specialising in sports and digital technology.

L The project, which is due for

completion in Easter 2013, will be a new state of the art building based on innovative Swedish designs. The building will be three stories high, with some 90 classrooms, and will be split into three colleges, Holmes, Wembley and Upper College.

Specialists in ground works and reinforced concrete aspects, Amery Construction Ltd, worked closely with SDS Ltd to meet the specification needs from the main contractor.

Due to the area of catchment, an attenuation tank has been installed to

hold storm water in times of heavy rain and release it via a vortex flow control into the main storm system.

Due to the versatility of their solutions and technical back-up, SDS was able to confidently supply and install the attenuation tank using their GEOlight units, with a storage capacity of 200m3 SDS is pleased to be involved with

.

Twickenham Academy, knowing that it will give local school leavers a greater opportunity to further their academic careers.

SDS employs very efficient and highly trained installation teams, allowing them to meet the requirements of any projects. Even though GEOlight was not originally specified on this project, SDS was confident that they would be able to produce a system that would meet their requirements.

The wide range of solutions available

from SDS means that systems can be designed to cover all situations and site constraints. The designers teamwork with clients to ensure that a water solution is provided to exactly match the unique requirements of the development. SDS provide a complete installation service, undertaking site preparation, installation and commissioning as well as using off-site pre-fabrication to help minimise on-site waste. effective than timber and aluminium and because it requires fewer maintenance cycles – it doesn’t require any painting for example – we believe we will make savings well into the future.” The Trust provides community, acute (hospital-based treatment) and specialist health services to around half a million people living in the Wakefield and North Kirklees areas, as well as areas further afield. It completed a major hospital development programme in March 2011, which involved the official opening of the new, state-of-the-art Pinderfields Hospital in September 2011. The new hospital now provides comprehensive care for the most seriously ill patients across the Wakefield district. Standing behind the main building is the Ashton Centre, which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema and skin cancer. Tel: 01625 420400
