Broadcasters and production houses need to enhance the value of their investments in non-linear editing (NLE) solutions by fully utilising digital workflows. Ed Casaccia, senior director of marketing, Grass Valley, reports.

ways to monetise content. However, to maximise the possibilities of the digital workflow, an NLE solution that is able to cope with the challenges and the latest developments of modern content production is required. For example, the desire of film makers to create features in 4K, including even very small scale independent productions, poses issues for many NLE solutions. These include the ability to process the size of the file and the fact they only work in an 8-bit per channel colour space - 4K resolution needs a 10-bit colour space. At Grass Valley we recognise that

editors need to work in a 10-bit colour space if they are to effectively edit 4K content. Changing the details of a high resolution picture, such as colour or contrast, using anything less than 10- bit can result in an unsightly effect known as banding, which is where

there are abrupt changes in shades of the same colour. Banding occurs when there are not enough levels in a channel to accurately reproduce a smooth change in gradation. Using 10- bits per channel provides an editor with four times the level of information per channel than 8-bit. For instance, 8-bit brightness has 254 levels whereas 10-bit has 1016 levels, ensuring that banding is eliminated when a picture is altered, or even faded to black. In fact, 30-bit colour correction - 10-bits x three channels - offers more than a billion total colours. To edit 4K content, editors need a

powerful machine combined with an HQX codec. Grass Valley’s HQX codec is the most superior codec on the market, supporting not only 4K and 10-bit, but also alpha channel information too. It is all well and good being able to

offer a high-bit colour space, but the NLE solution also needs to offer editors the ability to work rapidly. Time is of the essence in post-production, particularly in the broadcast arena where deadlines are tight in order to

with our Edit Anything tool. This enables any format to be edited with any other. Being able to mix formats on the timeline is an often overlooked factor by those who do not handle archived content, but it is an important one. As projects today are regularly shot on multiple formats - for example a Red for beauty shots or a DSLR for hard to reach angles - having to transcode rushes before a sequence creates unnecessary frustration and delays to the creative process. EDIUS Pro 6.5 also offers a

comprehensive 3D workflow, complete with stereoscopic 3D (S3D) editing tools and new 3D support across its editing peripherals. One advantage that EDIUS now offers editors working in S3D is that it enables the rapid creation of stereo pairs. It also automatically adjusts the alignment of the two images, removing human error and creating perfect S3D in a very short timeframe. As the production workflow

continues to grow in complexity and content needs to be completed faster, Grass Valley will always be looking to improve the tools at editors’ disposal, to which EDIUS bears testament.
