MEMBER B TRAINING TRAINING Speaking Frankly
Practical financial advice from Frank MacDonald I have recently been made redundant. What can I do regarding my loss of income? It would be advisable to establish whether or not the circumstances in which the redundancy occurred were fair and lawful. Detailed information regarding the rights and responsibilities of all parties in such circumstances can be obtained here: www.adviceguide.org.uk/index/life/ employment.htm. This link will lead to the broad spectrum of employment rights including entitlement to notice, pay in lieu of notice, and holiday pay. In the event that an employer
becomes insolvent or is declared bankrupt, redundancy payments and other sums owed to employees may be claimed from the Statutory Redundancy Fund: www.insolvency. gov.uk/
Subject to your personal and financial circumstances, you may be entitled to claim Jobseeker’s Allowance plus additional benefits to help you and your family to meet day-to-day living costs, which might include assistance with housing costs. If you are buying your home and have a mortgage, you might be able to negotiate a partial reduction/variation in the sums that you pay with your mortgage provider. Additionally, you may qualify for assistance towards Council Tax. Details of the full range of potential benefits may be obtained at www. adviceguide.org.uk/index/life/benefits. htm Fresh Start is a “one-stop” advisory
publication that contains information including guidance for members who are coping with the consequences of redundancy or unemployment. It provides a detailed practical and tactical guide to the available options and wider considerations for members. Fresh Start can be accessed and/or
downloaded (in pdf format) via the Benevolent Fund link on the CIOB website www.ciob.org.uk or, if you would prefer to receive a printed copy, please contact Frank MacDonald on 01344 630780 or via email fmacdonald@ciob.org.uk.
If you would like to discuss any concern then please feel free to contact Frank. All enquiries are entirely confidential. Email fmacdonald@ciob.org.uk or call 01344 630780
