Members to gain European recognition with new professional designation

The CIOB has welcomed the new European Building Expert (EurBE) designation launched by the Association of European Building Surveyors and Construction Experts (AEEBC). The new EurBE designation, which is open for CIOB members to apply for, is an opportunity for qualified professionals across Europe to achieve European recognition and accreditation alongside their qualifications. Saleem Akram, a director at the CIOB, said: “The CIOB has worked hard to get greater transparency in how the recognition of professional qualifications is implemented, particularly in relation to the professions provided for under the EU Professional Qualifications Directive. These EurBE Professional Cards give construction professionals greater recognition across Europe, leading to a fair and transparent mobility system.” Professionals who are awarded EurBE qualification will be recognised as having met the AEEBC common European-wide threshold standards required of a Building Expert. Carbon accountability approved

Last year when the CIOB launched its Carbon Action 2050 campaign it also became one of the first professional bodies in the UK to sign up to the Global Reporting Initiative

(GRI) standard. By signing up to GRI the Institute

committed itself to openly report and manage its own sustainability performance including its carbon footprint. One year on and the CIOB has had its first report approved by GRI. “We feel there is more credibility

in having an international standard measure our sustainability performance than producing a report to fit our own criteria,” explains Chris

Blythe, CIOB chief executive. “There is always a danger of being your own judge and jury.”

He added: “The beauty of GRI is that it is adaptable to fit your needs no matter where you are on sustainability and it encourages you to openly disclose that information. We launched our Carbon Action 2050 initiative with the same ideals — to make sustainability advice and information more accessible.” Since its launch in 2011 the Carbon Action 2050 campaign has reached thousands of people in the construction industry, and has recently linked with ConstructionSkills’ own Cut the Carbon initiative.

are assessed firstly by an AEEBC National Committee in the country in which they operate and secondly by an AEEBC European Committee. Approved EurBEs also become EurBE members of the AEEBC. This gives access to information and networking opportunities across European construction and building sectors.
