of children and money, divorce and discrimination, she finessed the holding of glass, plate, handbag, gloves and fork in one hand at cocktail parties and helped abolish the distinction between ‘women’s writing’ and anything considered serious. From her childhood in Mill Hill, North London, two universities, about a dozen jobs, two families, and a long career in journalism, here is her long and happy life with the thriller writer Gavin Lyall and their two sons. 69601 HAPLESS TEACHER’S

HANDBOOK by Phil Ball ‘I’m pinned to the floor, the youth’s face is so close to mine I can feel the smutty caress of his bum-fluff… Behind my frozen head, a wet draught blows in from the January playground and mixes with the sickly smell of school dinners…Their leader is a boy named Alan Plant, but I don’t know that yet. Neither does the boy know that I am about to become his English teacher for

the next two months. This is the beginning of the fabled ‘TP’…’ Here is the comic story of one man’s muddled metamorphosis into a teacher at an everyday comprehensive school. It is a tale of the highs and lows of attempting to teach, the joy of really making a difference to young minds to being physically set upon by a teenage horde. And that is just what happens in the classroom. Behind closed staff-room doors lie desperate lives, unseemly professional competition, a diet of cigarettes, alcohol and cold coffee, casual sex and general social dysfunction. Startling, funny and educational for all the wrong reasons! 312pp in paperback.

69808 BILLY BROWN, I’LL TELL YOUR MOTHER by Bill Brown

Although Bill Brown retired from the Fire Service in 1984, it was another 25 years before he wrote about his Brixton childhood. The war is over, and London is getting back on its feet. Rationing is still a part of everyday life, and for ten-year-old Billy, this means opportunity. With both his parents at work, after school and weekends are spent scouring the bomb sites and markets, working in a scrapyard and selling everything from bricks to horse muck, machetes to baby chicks. Packed full of wonderful characters, from the barrow boys to the first West Indian immigrants, the girls at Woolies to the rag and bone men and even Maisie, the smelliest and most incontinent horse south of the Thames, this heartwarming tale of Billy’s scrapes and shenanigans will have you laughing aloud as you remember Britain emerging from the war. 326pp paperback with b/w photos. £6.99 NOW £4

69904 BAD FAITH: A Forgotten History of

Family and Fatherland by Carmen Callil Here is the true, harrowing, in-depth story of one of history’s most despicable villains and conmen, Louis Darquier, who, during the abhorrent reign of the Vichy government in France, was responsible for the deaths of thousands of Jewish men, women and children. He was a practising Catholic, a Nazi collaborator and Commissioner for Jewish Affairs, which in reality meant that he conspired to exterminate the Jewish population. Here is the incredible account of how he rose to power, driven by an obsession with racial purity, continually reinventing himself until he was able to become responsible for confiscating the property of Jews and sending them off to the death camps. Perhaps even more gruesome is the fact that, after the war, Darquier fled to Spain - never to be brought to justice. Together with his alcoholic wife, he abandoned their daughter, Anne, who grew up in England, not surprisingly hating her father, and suffered a tragic fate. 614 pages illus in b/w, archive photos, maps. £20 NOW £5.50

69910 EDWARD HEATH by Philip Ziegler

Current interest in the seventies is booming and no figure sums up the conflicts of the decade more effectively than Prime Minister Edward Heath. Himself a mass of contradictions, Heath’s humble beginnings can be contrasted with his flamboyant taste in interior decoration, and his notoriously appalling French accent with his passionate championship of Europe.

Always ill at ease with women, in 1938 Heath opposed admitting them to the Oxford Union, saying “Women have no original contribution to make to our debates”. In spite of this, Heath enjoyed entertaining, and as a musician himself it gave him great satisfaction to host a 70th birthday party for the composer Sir William Walton, with music commissioned for the occasion. Politically speaking Heath’s most turbulent year was 1974 when he faced the militant miners, strikes, a blackout, confrontations in Northern Ireland, a personal and ideological struggle with Harold Wilson, a hung parliament and two disastrous elections, while in the Conservative party Margaret Thatcher was beginning to challenge his leadership. Heath’s later years were darkened by resentment of both Wilson and Thatcher. 654 pages, photos. £30 NOW £6.50

70159 HONS AND REBELS by Jessica Mitford

Jessica Mitford was the fifth of the six Mitford daughters and always the rebel among her sisters - Nancy, Pam, Diana, Unity and Debo. At the age of 19 she eloped to the Spanish Civil War with her cousin Esmond Romilly, and the two of them moved to the USA in 1939. A one-time member of the American Communist Party, Jessica was a passionate supporter of civil rights and wrote a number of books. Here is her classic memoir of one of last century’s most extraordinary families and it is an extremely amusing autobiography which evokes a whole generation. The Mitford family was made notorious by Nancy’s novels, Diana’s marriage to Sir Oswald Mosley, Unity’s infatuation with Hitler, Debo’s marriage to a Duke and Jessica’s passionate commitment to Communism. The book is a deeply absorbing memoir of an isolated and eccentric upbringing which conceals beneath its witty, light-hearted surface much wisdom and depth of feeling. 259pp in paperback, photos. £7.99 NOW £4

70021 BEARLY BELIEVABLE: My Part in the

Paddington Bear Story by Shirley Clarkson Whoever would have thought that Jeremy Clarkson’s mother would not only design and make a stuffed bear called Paddington, based on the characterful illustrations by Peggy Fortnum, but that she would also write an endearing book about it? For Christmas each year, she used to make a soft toy to sit on top of the children’s stockings and, in 1971, it happened to be this particular bear. Shirley tells with warmth, modesty and a blunt Yorkshire wit, her tale of building an international business, being invited to meet the Queen and then watching the whole thing collapse. A story of triumph and adversity with a touchingly happy ending. 210 pages illus in colour and b/w. £16.99 NOW £4.50

69488 HAROLD MACMILLAN by Charles Williams

The author is otherwise known as Lord Williams of Elvel, former industrialist and Labour peer and one of Britain’s most distinguished biographers. His subject, Harold Macmillan, was a figure of paradox. He was a courageous soldier in the First World War and from then on it was politics which was to be his future. Appointed Minister in Residence in North Africa, his career flowered, and as Churchill’s Minister of Housing in the early 1950s he achieved the target of building 300,000 houses annually. Over the Suez affair in 1956 he played a difficult and somewhat devious hand and Eden’s resignation left him as the clear choice of his cabinet colleagues to become Prime Minister. 548pp in paperback, photos. £14.99 NOW £5

69041 IMAGINARY FUTURES: From Thinking

Machines to the Global Village by Richard Barbrook

Barbrook traces the emergence of the computer era in the Cold War context of two desperately competing ideologies, economies and empires, and how it served the ideological needs of both élites. The West’s invention of the Western utopia was a vital factor in the struggle for global power, and the Internet was essential for getting that message across. However, the Soviet East arguably had a more accurate vision of the future, which is beginning to look more and more likely. Barbrook shows us how we can reclaim the revolutionary purpose of the web to change information technologies to suit us, the general public. 334pp, paperback. £17.99 NOW £2.25

70678 ENCHANTED WORLD OF WINNIE-THE- POOH

by A. A. Milne and Anna Bowles

“You are cordyally invited to elevenses with Winnie the Pooh and the 100 Aker Wood.” Welcome to the forest where we will find Kanga’s House and Eeyore’s Gloomy Place, where all the adventures take place except the Poohsticks which is played on a bridge to the north. Pooh’s world is actually based on the Ashdown forest in Sussex where oak trees are excellent for climbing - and falling out of! We can walk along Pooh’s nature trail, enjoy the trees, gorse, heather, dandelions, thistles, haycorns and bees he would have seen with his real life friend Christopher Robin who was used as a model for E. H. Shepard’s enchanting drawings. Many of the characters are here on these very large colourful pages with lift-the-flap real postcards stuck down, the blue check fabric from Christopher Robin’s shirt inserted in the page, as are his red tunic and rubbery wellington boots. Isn’t it funny how a bear likes honey? We could make a list of Pooh’s more fluff-brained moments and it would be a very long list, but perhaps rather unkind. He is after all A Bear of Very Little Brain. See him pop up from the pages, discover what colour piglet is, about wincing and blinching, and stroke the real fabric and cotton Eeyore tail stuck on to the pages of this very exciting interactive experience. The rules and tactics of Poohsticks are actually reproduced in a booklet and folded over towards
