RZD signs rail deal with Evraz R


USSIAN Railways (RZD) has signed a MOU with Evraz for a five-year contract to supply rails. The contract which will start next year and run until 2017 is worth around Roubles 90bn ($US 2.8bn). Evraz is completing a $US 520m project to rebuild its Western Siberia Metallurgical Plant to enable it to produce 100m-long head-hardened rails for the first time. Such rails can be used on heavy-haul or high- speed lines. The work will also increase production to 950,000 tonnes of rails a year. Evraz is also investing $US 60m to reconstruct its Nizhny Tahil Metallurgical

Plant to enable it to produce 25m-long volumetric tempered rails with a high-purity surface. When the upgrade has been completed, annual production will be boosted to 550,000 tonnes of rail. “Our railway products’ segment has excellent prospects for growth,” says Mr Ilya Shirokobrod, Evraz vice-president and head of the railway products division. “When the reconstruction is over we will be able to produce rails that meet the highest world standards and the strictest requirements of our customers, and in particular those of RZD.”

converters, energy storage systems, control, supervision and recording systems, passenger information, communications, and electronic control systems. “The aim is to become a highly-innovative dynamic alternative which offers custom-made solutions with Iris, CMMI and ISO 9000 certification,” says CAF.


EMD and plant, automotive and handling product distributor Barloworld have formed Electro-Motive Diesel Africa, a joint venture which will assemble diesel locomotives in South Africa for the southern African market.


Australia


QR National has awarded a $A 56m civil works contract for the Wiggins Island Rail Project to Leighton Contractors. The work involves 18km of track duplication between Rocklands and Stanwell near Rockhampton, one of the project’s six key work sites.


Bangladesh


Bangladesh Railways (BR) has signed a $US 74m contract with Rites, India, for 16 1676mm-gauge diesel locomotives. Deliveries will begin within 18 months. The deal forms part of a $US 1bn credit granted recently to Bangladesh by India, under which India will provide $US 52m of the total cost of the purchase, leaving the Bangladeshi government to cover the balance.


Brazil


São Paulo commuter rail operator CPTM has ordered an initial batch of four diesel locomotives from EIF Locomotives, Brazil. The locomotives will incorporate the Sygnet Power Module from Sygnet Rail Technologies, United States.


Germany BMA orders Siemens locomotives for Bowen Basin:


Siemens has been awarded a contract to supply 13 1067mm- gauge 25kV heavy-haul electric locomotives to the BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA), which will be used on coal trains in Queensland from 2014 onwards. The ac traction locomotives will be among the most powerful narrow-gauge electric locomotives in the world and will be similar to the 77 Siemens 4MW locomotives already in operation with QR National and Pacific National in Queensland. The fleet will be delivered in late 2013 for use on trains from BMA’s new coal mines at Caval Ridge and Daunia in the Bowen Basin to the Hay Point export terminal.


IRJ August 2012


German Rail (DB) has ordered an additional 38 Coradia Lint regional trains from Alstom for É160m. The order consists of 14 trains with 112 seats which is part of a framework contract signed in 2008, and 24 trains with 160 seats which is an option from a contract signed in 2011. DB Regio will operate the trains on the southwest diesel network in Rhineland- Palatinate, Hesse and Baden-


Württemberg from 2015.  Axtone Group, Poland, has agreed a 100% acquisition of Langen and Sondermann, a manufacturer of coil and leaf springs.


In brief Kyrgyzstan


Kyrgyz Railways has agreed to purchase five locomotives based on GE’s Evolution design produced in Astana, Kazakhstan (IRJ July p14).


New Zealand


KiwiRail has begun the technical and legal process to revalue its assets to better reflect the revenue they generate. Assets are likely to be revalued at approximately $NZ 1.1-1.3bn ($US 867m- 1.02bn), significantly lower than their current book value of approximately $NZ 7.8bn.


Russia


Russian private railfreight operator Globaltrans has signed a Roubles 2.5bn ($US 76.7m) seven-year loan agreement with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, which will help it to fund 10,000 new wagons and the acquisition of new locomotives. All 10,000 vehicles have already been delivered, although Globaltrans has recently placed an additional order for a further 958 wagons which will be delivered by the end of this month.


Sweden


The Swedish Supreme Audit has rated Trafikverket’s 2011-12 SKr 40bn ($US 5.79bn) procurement strategy under which the transport authority is acting as the buyer of turnkey projects as “risky.” The auditor concluded that it is not leading to greater productivity, did not increase the cost-effectiveness ratio, and stifles competition. Trafikverket rejected the findings saying that the two- year study period was too short to reach a definitive conclusion.


United States


Regional operator RailAmerica is reportedly attracting takeover interest from Genesee & Wyoming and Watco Companies. Several infrastructure and Canadian pension funds are also thought to be evaluating bids for the railway which has a market value of $US 1.2bn. IRJ
