The western extension of the city’s light rail line from Les Bananiers to Lycée and Les Fusillés opened on June 15, finally linking the light rail, metro, and suburban rail networks. The 14-station, 9.1km extension more than doubles the length of the line, providing interchanges with the RER at Caroubiers, and Metro Line 1 at Les Fusillés.
Bangalore
Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation began dynamic testing of the first trains for the Namma Metro Green Line at Peenya depot on June 27. Commercial services are expected to begin on the initial 10km section between Peenya and Sampige Road by April 2013 using trains supplied by a consortium of BEML, Mitsubishi and Hyundai Rotem.
Bucharest

Meanwhile Orléans opened its second light rail line on June 29. The 11.3km Line B serves 25 stations, linking Clos du Hameau in the eastern district of St Jean de Braye with Georges Pompidou station in La Chapelle-Saint- Mesmin via an interchange with Line A at De Gaulle in the city centre. Services operate at six-minute intervals in peak periods, and 6-8 minutes at other times with a 30-minute service after 21.00. There are six park-and-ride stations, including the two termini, and the end-to-end journey time is 40 minutes.
Bids invited for Salvador Metro expansion The Reais 3.5bn ($US 1.7bn)
project comprises the 5.6km northern extension of Line 1 from Acesso Norte to Pirajá, which will have three stations, and Line 2, which will run for 24.2km from an interchange with Line 1 at Bonocô Avenue to Deputado Luís Eduardo Magalhães International Airport and Lauro de Freitas. Construction is expected to start next year and both lines will be completed in 2016.
Metrorex has awarded Astaldi a ƒ164m contract to build the 2km northern extension of Line 4 from Parc Bazilescu to Laminorului and Lac Straulesti. Construction will start at the end of this year and is due to be completed in mid-2015.
Charlotte (USA)
The North Carolina state government has approved a budget that restores state funding contributions to the $US 1.2bn Lynx Blue Line light rail extension to University City. The state will fund 25% of the full cost of the 17km extension, while the city will provide 25%, with federal contributions expected to cover the remaining 50%.
Delhi
Delhi Airport Metro Express suspended all services on July 7 following the discovery of cracks in the elevated structures. Reports suggest 250 of the 2100 bridge bearings were severely damaged. Repairs are due to be completed by next month.
Dongguan
Dongguan Rail Transit Company, which is overseeing
construction of the city’s metro network, has awarded CSR Nanjing Puzhen Rolling Stock company a Yuan 860m ($US 135m) contract to supply 20 six-car trains for the initial 37.7km phase of Line R2, which is due to open in 2015. CSR Nanjing Puzhen has awarded Bombardier and New United Group a Yuan 180m contract to supply traction equipment for the trains.
Manchester
Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) approved the acquisition of a further 20 M5000 vehicles from Bombardier and Vossloh Kiepe, which will see the replacement of the remaining Ansaldo T68 trams by 2014. The decision means all services on the Manchester Metrolink network will be operated by a standardised fleet of 94 M5000s.
New York
MTA and mobile ticketing developer Masabi are to begin testing a smartphone app that will allow Metro North commuter rail passengers to purchase tickets electronically and use their device as proof of payment. During the pilot, selected users will be able to download the free app to their iPhone, Android, or Blackberry phones allowing them to purchase any type of ticket with any origin or destination using a credit or debit card. The time and date- stamped electronic ticket appears on the purchaser’s phone screen as a secure image that can be validated visually by the conductor.
Odense
The municipal government has awarded Parsons Brinckerhoff a contract to assist with project
management on the city’s first light rail line. A pre-feasibility study for the light rail scheme has been completed enabling concept design to start this month, and an environmental impact assessment is due to be submitted to the Ministry of Transport by late 2013. The objective is to put the project out to tender in 2015 and to open the line in 2020.
