Dlagnev pin caps USA win
By Gary Abbott NEW YORK – It came down to the last match, tied 3-3, and all on the shoulders of the heavyweights. 2009 World bronze medalist and 2012 Olympian Tervel Dlagnev ended the drama quickly, taking Eduard Bazrov of Russia to his back in a scramble, and scoring a pin in just 25 seconds.
“Being a heavyweight, I’m used to it coming down to the last match,” Dlagnev said. “I was planning on winning anyway, so it didn’t really matter what the team score was. It was a lot of fun to come out with a win and help our team win.” The U.S. also secured wins from Olympians Jared Frayer at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and Jordan Burroughs at 74 kg/163 lbs., plus a clutch come-from-behind win from 2012 NCAA champion Logan Stieber at 60 kg/132 lbs. Stieber’s win proved big. He defeated Akhmed Chakaev, 1-3, 7-0, 5-4. Stieber scored a takedown and an exposure early in the second period to jump to a 3-0 lead. Another takedown and two turns made it 7-0.
The third period was a see-saw match which went down to the buzzer. On two occasions, Chakaev scored two point expo- sures, only to see Stieber come back with two point reversals. Chakaev took a 4-3 lead on an exposure, but Stieber got the two-point reversal as time ran out to win the period 5-4. Frayer also had an exciting bout, needing three periods to beat Dzalaludin Kurbanaliev, 5-0, 0-2, 1-0. Frayer won the first period, 5-0 on a sweet five-point throw. Kurbanaliev scored both takedowns in the second period. The final period was decided with a late Frayer spin-behind takedown for the winning score. Burroughs, a 2011 World champion, dominated his match to win over Kamal Malikov, 8-0, 5-0. USA 4, RUSSIA 3
