LOGISTICS AND mail ser- vices provider Deutsche Post DHL has outlined plans for further expansion of its pres- ence in China and the wider Asia-Pacific region. Having already invested over


US$2.5 billion in Asia in recent years, DHL’s Express, Global Forwarding and Supply Chain divisions are all continuing to enhance their services there. The company is placing spe-


cial emphasis on China as “the main engine for both regional and global economic growth for years to come”. Revenues in China already constitute more than half of DHL’s total Asian revenues. CEO Frank Appel said: “Logistics plays a


key role in the dynamic development of the Chinese economy. It is an essential component in ensuring both efficient international trade flows to and from China and the effective func- tioning of such a complex economy.” Among investments in the region, the $175 million DHL Express North Asia Hub at

Shanghai Pudong airport opened last week. The biggest express hub in Asia, the facility will allow DHL to provide greater flexibility and reliability with time-definite delivery in northern Asia and beyond. Appel describes it as “a logistics milestone in DHL’s Asia Pacif- ic network”. Second, DHL Supply Chain


is soon to open a state-of-the-art MegaHub in Hong Kong that is expected to enhance opera- tional efficiency and customer flexibility by “bundling four


warehouses into one”. Finally, DHL Global Forwarding is to inau-


gurate a new operations hub in the region in order to reduce transit times and save costs through the consolidation of shipments sent worldwide by customers from across Asia. Appel observed: “Over the past three


decades we have established a second to none platform in the Asian markets, which sets the foundation for the continued success of our DHL divisions.”


United outlines network expansion plans


US CARRIER United Airlines is to expand its network with the addition of several new international and domestic routes. On 9 April next year, the


carrier will begin daily year- round B777 services from its hub at San Francisco Interna- tional airport to Taipei’s Taiwan Taoyuan International airport. Two days later, flights will


commence from San Francisco to Paris Charles de Gaulle air- port. United will operate B767-300 equipment on the daily year-round services. Closer to home, the airline intends to


launch daily United Express flights between Chicago O’Hare International airport and Monterrey in Mexico from 19 December this year; daily B737-800 services between Wash- ington/Dulles and San Salvador International airport from the same date; United Express


services from Los Angeles to Kelowna, also from 19 December; and daily United Express links from Chicago to Thunder Bay north of the border in Canada from 14 February 2013. All of the new flights remain subject to gov-

FEDEX CORP has now completed its acqui- sition of French express transportation company TATEX, giving the integrator access to a nation- wide ground network while TATEX customers will benefit from FedEx’s global coverage.


CARGO THROUGHPUT at Dubai Interna- tional airport amounted to 187,638 tonnes in May, a slight fall of 0.1 percent compared to the same month of last year. Over the course of the year to date, the gateway has processed 891,464 tonnes of cargo – up by 1.4 percent year-on-year.


DELTA AIR LINES achieved a 4.8 percent year-on-year growth in its freight traffic in June, notching up a total of 205.6 million cargo ton- miles.

THE COOL CHAINAssociation, the Nether- lands-based network of freight forwarders specialising in the movement of temperature- sensitive goods, has welcomed Pakistan’s Dynamic Logistics International as its latest member.


FINNISH AIRPORT operator Finavia has reported total freight and mail throughput across all 25 of its airports in Finland of 16,324 tons during June – a rise of 13 percent in comparison to the same month of last year.


LIBYA’S AFRIQIYAH Airways has resumed service from Tripoli to London Gatwick airport, offering direct three times a week A320 flights. The carrier had suspended the route due to political unrest in Libya.
