A Chance to Start Over

M

AKE IT RIGHT attempted to fi nd as many of the original property owners in order to “reunite” them with their neighborhood. In this “Road Home” program, buyers are expected to con- tribute as much of their own resourc-

es as they can to cover the purchase price of the home. The average price of a single-family home is $150,000; the average price of a duplex is $200,000. The average resident contribution to date (cash at

closing) has been $75,000, usually made up of grants from Road Home, other programs and outside mortgage fi nancing. To qualify, the person or someone in his or her im- mediate family, had to live in the Lower Ninth Ward when Katrina hit. All housing costs (purchase price, taxes, insurance) are limited to no more than one-third of the buyer’s income. For those who don’t qualify fi nancially, Make It Right counselors help potential buyers coordinate their resourc- es, improve credit ratings, and apply for third-party or Make It Right loans.

Xeriscaped yards, as seen above, reduce the need for water and maintenance, and lend a dramatic look to standard lots.
