Curtains of rain fall on a forest in Tanzania. As Earth’s surface has warmed during the past century, the atmosphere has absorbed more moisture from the land and oceans. For every degree of warming, the air can hold about seven percent more moisture. With more moisture in the atmosphere, there is more water available for severe downpours, which have increased in frequency in recent decades.
