Dr. Speer: My wife has sung for the Houston Grand Opera chorus, and she was active in the Houston Gilbert and Sullivan Society for many years. She’s still on the board of trustees. She sings and plays the piano. I can truthfully say I did not bring the gene pool down, but I didn’t necessarily contribute a whole lot to it. I played guitar and sang folk songs in college and medical school, but I haven’t played in years. I just haven’t had the time.
Dr. Raimer leads state health panel
Ben Raimer, MD, board-certified pediatri- cian and senior vice president and pro- fessor at The University of Texas Medi- cal Branch at Galveston, will head the 13-member Texas Institute of Health Care Quality and Efficiency Board of Directors. The 2011 session of the legislature
created the institute to improve health care quality, accountability, education, and cost to the state by encouraging col- laboration among health care profession- als, effective health care delivery models, and coordination of health care services. Dr. Raimer is a member and past pres-
ident of the Galveston County Medical Society, a public representative for the Texas Health and Human Services Com- mission Task Force on Local Health Care Initiatives, and past chair of the Texas Statewide Health Coordinating Council and the Health Disparities Task Force. Gov. Rick Perry appointed Dr. Raimer
and 12 other physicians, health care ex- ecutives, and educators to the institute board. The appointees are:

• Steven Berkowitz, MD, Austin, found- er and president of SMB Health Con- sulting;
