THEWORLD’S STRONGEST BOILER
CHILE EXPERTISE IN BIOMASS TECHNOLOGY WAS NOT ENOUGHWHEN WSP WAS ASKED TO DESIGN A STEEL FRAME TO SUPPORT A BOILER AT A PAPER MILL – IT HAD TO BE EARTHQUAKE-PROOF TOO.

If there is an earthquake, the boiler will swing like a bell from one side to another. We have to take that into account in the steel-frame design so it’s able to dissipate the energy from the swinging of the boiler. That was our biggest challenge.
Matti-Esko Järvenpää, Project Manager
Paper company CMPC Celulosa wanted to generate power from its production waste, so it turned to WSP’s industrial experts in Finland to design a steel frame from which to hang a biomass boiler. The Helsinki-based team had designed a number of these projects across the world, so its theories were well tested, but the high level of seismic activity within Chile presented particular challenges.
The solution was a vast 50m-high frame, which has a span of 15m and contains 1,200 tonnes of steel. WSP worked closely with a multinational project team to create and deliver a robust solution, achieving local approvals swiftly and receiving very positive feedback from client Metso Power.
