ometimes sticking it out pays off. When I got to Dania Beach, Florida, at 5:30
a.m., the seas were about two feet with some wind. Manageable, so I hopped on my Ocean Kayak Trident Ultra and paddled out into the darkness. The sunrise was spectacu- lar, and the day started off great when an Al- maco jack grabbed my jig on the first drop. As I released a second jack, I noticed that the swells were picking up and the winds were blowing me out deeper. I headed in closer to shore looking for calmer conditions, but
the wind wouldn’t
relent. Considering how hard my kayak was thumping in the ocean waves, I decided on one more drop before calling it a day. The jig was halfway back up the water column when a freight train hit my line. It went from a vertical to a horizontal battle almost in- stantly. I was thinking wow, this must be a really big king, but after two blistering runs and a 20-minute tug of war, I began to hope. Could this be my first kayak wahoo? When I saw the stripes I couldn’t help but yell. The ‘hoo weighed in at 40 pounds and 56 inches long, the first I’ve heard of caught by kayak outside Hawaii. —Robinson Rodriguez
