IN THE HATCH BY MICHAEL MECHAN PADDLE DELUXE

WERNER PADDLES

CYPRUS www.wernerpaddles.com • $475 (Bent Shaft)

The Cyprus is Werner’s most popular high-angle, foam core paddle. Its midsized blades suit a wide range of paddlers and offer plenty of power in the catch phase. Their smooth-backed design creates a signature silky feel for confidence in advanced maneuvers. Werner’s Smart-View adjustable ferrule is everything you could ask for—intuitive, precise, firm and dependable—with 15-degree adjustment increments, left or right.

LENDAL

XRANGE www.lendalna.com • $470 (Bent Shaft)

We were excited to hear Lendal is once again manufacturing paddles. Well-balanced and lightweight, the all-carbon XRange accommodates high- or low-angle styles. Unique four-piece construction offers unparalleled portability and interchangeable blades. Lendal’s Alan key-release Paddlok system keeps joints secure, but there’s a bit more play than in a two-piece paddle. Upgrade to the Varilok system if you want to adjust feather angle.

H2O PADDLES

SUPERTOUR www.h2opaddles.com • $435 (Bent Shaft)

H2O is mixing things up with new nano-nickel blades, featuring a blend of metal and plastic that is tremendously stiff. The long, narrow blades suggest it’s designed for low-angle use but we found it better suited to high-angle paddling. A slick push and twist ferrule makes changing feather angle a snap. While the nearly indestructible construction will appeal to some, its heavier weight means carbon will remain the top choice of distance paddlers.

AQUABOUND

SWELL CARBON www.aquabound.com • $375

Aquabound’s Swell won us over with its simplicity. The straight shaft’s no-frills, snap-button ferrule leaves little room for failure. Paddlers look- ing for more than just a 60-degree right- or left-hand feather should upgrade to Aquabound’s optional telescoping system. Two-piece, all- carbon construction gives the Swell a light swing weight that’s forgiv- ing on long excursions. Narrow blades suit a low-angle paddling style.

ADVENTURE TECHNOLOGY

XCEPTION STANDARD www.atpaddles.com • $355

The Xception’s versatile blade design is efficient for both low- and high-angle paddlers. AT’s rock solid Synapse ferrule system allows on- water feather angle adjustments without taking the paddle apart or changing hand position. Heftier than the full carbon paddles we tested, its well-balanced design made the weight of the durable carbon, Aramid and glass-blended shaft less noticeable. Looking for something lighter? Upgrade to the Superlight version.
