Welcome

Welcome to your May/June issue of The Teacher.

This issue is full of the latest news on some of our key campaigns, especially pensions. You probably know that after a London teachers’ strike in March, NUT members voted at our annual conference to continue the fight against pension cuts. Read more about this and other conference debates on pages 25 to 28, and more about our pensions campaign on pages 12 to 13.

Performance management, phonics and pay continue to be high on our agenda. Read the latest on our appraisal campaign on page 20 and more about phonics testing on page 4.

Elsewhere, we have a competition with some fabulous Countdown-sponsored prizes. For all you budding writers, read page 15. And on page 18 you can win a weekend at Stoke Rochford Hall.

Let us know what you think of this issue by writing to our ‘Letters’, on pages 46 and 47.

Christine Blower, General Secretary
