Shipbuilding Navantia and Veercraft


Marine sign MoU Navantia in Spain has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Veercraft Marine, a shipbuilding company in South Africa, under which both parties will collaborate with regard to the construction of offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) and inshore patrol vessels (IPVs) for the South African Navy under the so-called ‘BIRO’ Project. Te objective is to identify and pursue possible


business opportunities for the construction of OPVs and IPVs for the South African Navy and jointly make the necessary efforts for the award of the BIRO project. Navantia has also announced that, on 6 February


2012 is commissioned Relámpago, the third of a series of four OPVs it is building for the Spanish Navy. Te first two units, Meteoro and Rayo, were commis-

DCNS launches LHDs

Contracts & awards US Navy funds two LCS


Austal USA’s order backlog has grown by US$691 million as a result of two additional Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) contract options being exercised by the US Navy. Te contract options fund construction of Gabrielle


Giffords (LCS 10) and Omaha (LCS 12), the third and fourth ships in the 10-ship block buy award made to an Austal-led team in December 2010. That 10-ship programme is potentially worth more than US$3.5 billion. Austal USA now holds confirmed contracts for 14 US

Coast Guard deal Fincantieri has been awarded a contract by the US Coast Guard for the construction of 40 Response Boats – Medium (RB-M) for delivery in the second quarter of 2013. With an approximate value of US$89.6 million the


new boats are part of a multi-year, US Coast Guard contract for the construction and delivery of up to 250 RB-Ms at a total contract value of up to US$600 million. Tis brings the total number of boats under contract to 166. Marinette Marine Corporation (MMC), a Fincantieri company, will act as prime contractor and programme
