logistic support. Te lead vessel is reportedly on trials and delivery is slated for mid-2012. Te circa 2400tonne Damen 9014 design


(also known as the DN 2000) has a length of 90m, a beam of 14m and a draught of 4m. The propulsion system consists of four Caterpillar C3516C diesels driving two propellers for a top speed of 21knots. A bow thruster is also fitted. Te OPV is fitted with two rigid-hull inflatable boats, fire-fighting equipment and a large flight deck capable of operating helicopters in the 14tonne class, such as the Kamov Ka-27/28. The ships will be fitted with a forward-mounted cannon as well as machine guns. Its complement is 40 plus 30 SAR personnel and another 50 persons. Russian reports suggest that Vietnam


is also building six, plus potentially another four, Pr1041.8 Molniya FACs locally with material kits from Vympel (Rybinsk) shipyard in Russia and the technical supervision of Almaz Design bureau. However, further details of the build programme are not readily available. Vietnam’s navy operates two of these Rybinsk-built ships along with a number of the older Pr 1241RE types.


Sigma class corvettes However, the most complex warship project on the horizon is the construction of up to four Damen Sigma class corvettes. Te Vietnamese are said to be in negotiation with Damen for four of these vessels. Damen has also supplied Vietnam with


a number of auxiliaries. Song Tu Shipyard delivered a HSV 6613 multipurpose hydrographic survey vessel named Giáo Su Vien sĩ Tran Đai Nghĩa on 24 November 2011. Construction of HSV-6613 commenced in July 2008 with the ship launching in October 2010. A second ship to a modified design with a forward superstructure is also under construction. Tese ships will be used for seabed mapping ahead of the Vietnamese Navy’s planned introduction of submarines, from 2014 onwards. Tis design has a length of 66.35m, a


beam of 13.20m, a draught of 4m and a full load displacement of around 1550tonnes. Te ship has a diesel-electric propulsion system with four Caterpillar 3412C TA generators, two azimuthing propellers and a bow thruster. Its range is 5000nm at 10knots while endurance is 60 days. sonar suite from Atlas Hydrographic. Apart from these, three large salvage


tugs have been built for the Marine Police at Song Tu Shipyard in Da Nang. A fourth vessel is scheduled for delivery this year. Te first two, CSB 9001 and 9002 are 45.7m long to a DST 4612 design. Te third, CSB 9003 that was delivered in July 2011, is a larger, 1400tonne vessel with a length of 52m. Tese ships are used for SAR, diving support and oil spill response in addition to salvage tasks. Apart from the Damen designs, a number


of locally-designed auxiliaries have been built. Tese include large numbers of logistic support ships as well as a few landing ship tank vessels. Recently, 189 Shipbuilding


Company delivered a 71m, 2050tonne troop transport, HQ 571 (K122). It is also building K123, a larger hospital/medical ship. In addition to building ships locally,


Vietnam has been steadily inducting several platforms. Recent inductions include two Zelenodolsk built Pr 11661 Gepard 3.9 light frigates in 2011 and two Almaz built Pr10412 Svetlyaks – HQ 264 and HQ 265 – in January 2012. Two more modified Gepards are on order


while two more Svetlyaks are building at Vostochnaya Verf in Vladivostok. Te most important new acquisition is six Pr 636 Kilo submarines that are being built at Admiralty Shipyard. Tese are due for delivery from 2014 onwards. WT
