HUGHES SISTERS RETURN HOME FOR PARK DISTRICT ICE SHOW Olympians Sarah and Emily Hughes returned to their roots on March

25 when they took part in the annual Great Neck Park District’s Ice Show at the Andrew Stergiopoulos Ice Rink. The sisters grew up honing their skating skills at the Parkwood ice rink

in Great Neck, N.Y. The rink was renamed in honor of Stergiopoulos, a Great Neck North High School graduate who died in the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. “There’s no better way to grow up than in this beautiful community,

in a rink like this,” Sarah told the crowd, according to a story in the Long Island Populist Examiner. Sarah still practices at the rink, she said, and her father, John, plays in the district’s adult hockey program.

The park district’s ice show is a culmination of the skating sea- son, where more than 200 young- sters showcase their skills for family and friends. Each performance was designed around an “Our World” musical theme. Students performed their new skills in colorful costumes. Sarah and Emily’s nieces, Natalie and Alex Parker, made their public
