in the same arena, where she began as a silver- level skater. In 2008 she tested up to gold and medaled in the championship division, but she hadn’t earned a championship medal since. Finn is happy with her placement and score of 32.04 points, and now plans to move up to the masters level.

Taking the bronze medal was Jessica Sciesz- inski, another competitor from the All Year Fig- ure Skating Club. Looking polished and poised, Scieszinski wore a stunning red dress and her hair and makeup were perfect.

“I was completely booked doing hair and makeup for other competitors, but of course I had to save time for me,” Scieszinski said. Mission accomplished, as all the details were in place — including her abilities on the ice. Sci- eszinski opened with a solid Axel-toe loop-loop sequence, and her layback spin earned a rousing applause. Skating to Paul Mauriat’s “Les Gui- tares,” this was Scieszinski’s first championship medal in three trips to the gold ladies event. “My goal was to skate a clean program,” she

said. “I truly wasn’t concerned with placement, but I’m really happy, because this was a personal best.”

Her future goals are to land her double jumps consistently and to move up to the masters level. Only .02 points behind was Heather Hilgar,

from the University of Delaware FSC. Hilgar’s spins were some of the best in the event; they helped earn her the pewter medal.

CHAMPIONSHIP GOLD MEN by BARB REICHERT

Marco Pizzo crafted his metaphor well. Af- ter failing to qualify for the U.S. Adult Champi- onships in this event in 2011, a determined Pizzo worked hard to reinvent his skating. In the off- season, he found his strength and intertwined it with artistry. Te result: a phoenix. With a red, feather collar accenting an all- black outfit, the Long Beach, Calif., skater in- deed rose from the ashes of 2011, performing an inspired program to win the 2012 title. Pizzo of the All Year Figure Skating Club earned 32.03 points to edge silver medalist Dan- iel Paepke of the Washington Figure Skating Club, who earned 30.94 points. Ian Catindig of
