TERROR WATCH Terror Watch
A round-up of significant terrorist attacks around the world over the past two months. Attacks related to ongoing conflicts and insurgencies are not included unless they are notable or have led to a significant loss of life, as these are daily occurrences and too numerous to include in this briefing.
EUROPE Belgium 12 March:
An imam was killed and one person injured after a petrol bomb was thrown through the window of a mosque west of Brussels.
France March: Mohamed Merah, a French national of Algerian origin, shot dead 3 soldiers and 3 Jewish children and their teacher in Toulouse in a series of attacks. Merah, who was later shot dead by police during a siege of his apartment, claimed the attacks were to avenge the deaths of Palestinian children by the Israeli military, and in retaliation for France’s involvement in the war in Afghanistan.
UK 6 April:
A bomb with a significant amount of explosives was defused in Newry, Northern Ireland. The device had been placed on the main Belfast- Dublin route.
AFRICA
AMERICAS Colombia 9 March:
Four soldiers and two civilians were injured in an alleged FARC bombing in southern Colombia.
Colombia 18 March: FARC militants killed 11 soldiers in a guerrilla attack in the northwest.
Kenya 10 March: Grenade attacks near a busy bus station in Nairobi left at least three people dead and over 40 injured.
Nigeria 8 March:
A Briton and an Italian hostage were killed by the Islamist extremists holding them since May 2011, during a rescue attempt by British commandoes and Nigerian security forces.
Somalia 4 April:
The head of Somalia's Olympic Committee and the head of the Somali football Association were killed along with 6 others in a bomb attack by a female suicide bomber at the national theatre in Mogadishu. Prime Minister Abdiweli Mohamed Ali survived the blast unhurt. al-Shabaab claimed responsibility.
