Speaking Frankly … Practical financial advice from Frank MacDonald, the Benevolent Fund secretary
I suffered an accident at work and have been unable to return to my employment. What financial help is available to help with my mortgage and other bills? You may be able to claim industrial injuries disablement benefit. This state benefit is not means tested and is payable to people (not self- employed) that have suffered lasting disablement as a direct result of an industrial accident. It is important to stress here that to be able to make a claim, it is essential that you can verify the event and that the accident was formally recorded in the company’s Accident Book. Individual situations vary so it is impossible to advise with certainty as to the extent of entitlement here, though it is always worthwhile submitting a claim. For further information and an
application pack either telephone the Benefit Enquiry Line: 0800 882 200, or visit:
www.direct.gov.uk/en/ MoneyTaxAndBenefits/ BenefitsTaxCreditsAndOtherSupport/ Disabledpeople/DG_171827 You may also qualify for other benefits such as Disability Living Allowance to help with your care or mobility needs. Income support and/or housing benefit and council tax benefit might also be available to you. You may wish to contact either your local Citizens Advice Bureau for further advice or visit its website at www.
adviceguide.org.uk/index/life/ benefits/benefits_for_people_who_
are_sick_or_disabled.htm Apart from state benefits it would be advisable to seek advice regarding the circumstances that gave rise to your accident, in relation for example, to negligence and/or health and safety implications. This is particularly important where the prospects of returning to work are uncertain. Further information is available at:

built environment, has issued guidance on managing flood risk to new developments. The two-part digest sets out an overall approach to flood-resilient building in the UK, covering legislation and planning requirements, flood-risk assessment, flood performance of buildings,

and design and sustainable development. “There are estimated to be two million
properties and five million people in the UK currently at risk from flooding, and this figure is set to rise due to issues such as increasing urbanisation and climate change,” said the author of the digest, BRE construction director Stephen Garvin. Problems are exacerbated by urban drainage, with more than 40% of UK flood events driven by surface and drainage issues. Flooded buildings suffer damage, with the result that substantial time and cost are required to render them habitable again. The impact on the building users, both in domestic and non-domestic premises, is significant. There are different types of flood that may
be experienced and these have different characteristics, and require different strategies and methods to manage the risk of flooding.
