er (four years).”

But once in the program, the individualism of the sport fades and the family atmosphere shines. “It’s a tremendous honor,” said Byers. “Understanding all the while, there are people doing so much more for this country. To be mentioned in the same sentence as the soldiers who are putting their lives on the line and to represent them in any light or form is something to be proud of. “To win an Olympic event or something like that and say I’m a

part of them, or this is for them, it adds even more to how pres- tigious the honor really is,” he said. “It’s important to be here doing this.”

under Duaine Martin and men’s freestylers work under Jason Kutz, the legacy and tradition of WCAP will only continue to grow.

Byers is excited about the influx of new blood to the program in all three styles.

“They get to touch my generation, they’ll see me and remem- ber me,” said Byers. “Tradition is nothing without new blood. If the storied tradition dies off, you need someone new to tell it.” Said Byers: “WCAP is a wonderful opportunity. Not everyone is able and that’s understood, but there’s a program that gives soldiers an opportunity to pursue and achieve a dream such as an Olympic medal. Hats off to the people who had the wisdom to make it happen. I’m very happy and humble to be a part of this unit.”
