MARKET REPORT The Power Bro

The superyacht market continues to prove resilient as experienced buyers (and those less exposed to volatile Western economies) take advantage of some exceptional opportunities.

Still, we are in unfamiliar waters. Clients selling or buying (or both) would do well to use a broker with a full range of skills and, crucially, a global network. In today’s market, events in China and India are as important as what happens in Moscow or London.

We have recently seen burgeoning interest in yacht ownership in both Brazil and Australia. The continuing rise of personal wealth in Asia has had an impact on a number of deals recently, with

interest focusing on new yachts for entertainment and socialising, rather than family cruising. It looks unlikely that prices in new construction can go any lower, as shipyards are constrained by overheads. Throw in the improved lead times, and this could be a good time to consider custom-building if you are seeking something utterly unique and personal. Bear in mind, though, that the market in pre-owned yachts remains occupied with some impressive inventory. It is hard to see past some of the pedigree beauties we have for sale at the moment.

2012 is shaping up to be an exciting year for the Burgess brokerage team. Yachting still offers the ultimate leisure experience, but in the new climate, the decision to buy must be justified rationally. Only an experienced broker can help an owner balance the commercial equation by advising on re-sale value, provenance, quality, running costs and potential for charter revenue. For the full story, you must talk to your Burgess broker.
