WAY TO GO!
A send off nobody will forget
PAUL Sullivan understands the importance of fi nding the right accountant, after being surprised by a large tax bill! After working for over fi fteen years for other local funeral
directors, Paul and his wife Louise made the decision, fi ve years ago, to open up their own business in Dover. Paul naturally sought the services of a well known fi rm of accountants in order to help him ensure his tax returns were in order. The fi rst 18 months were a challenge, as is often the case with new businesses, but even more so in an industry where reputation and personal recommendation is paramount to success.

Having persevered through those initial years Paul thought all was looking well for the future, until in year four he was met with the shock of a hefty tax bill. Totally taken by surprise he naturally felt let down by his accountant who he considered had not properly advised him.
Good professional advice in a friendly manner
CLIENT
Paul contacted Ian Pascall of our Dover offi ce to see how MFW could help and was immediately impressed with our underlying philosophy of helping businesses to keep more of what they earn. Ian took time to talk with Paul
and fi nd out as much as possible about his business and was proactive in providing the support and advice Paul needed. By providing some fairly basic tax planning advice and undertaking some due diligence work on the trading fi gures, Ian was able to reduce Paul’s tax bill and help him to improve his future profi tability.
“Ian immediately gave me good professional advice in a

friendly manner and just took the trouble to ask questions my last accountants hadn’t. Knowledgeable and practical things which I didn’t know about but have made a signifi cant difference to my liabilities and, as a result my lifestyle” says Paul.
The personal touch Whilst a career as an undertaker is not everyone’s cup of tea, Paul decided it was
STANDING OUT FROM THE NORM
A fi nal ride with style, the Hearse Bike!
THE way in which you can ‘meet your maker’ has never been more varied with a wide range of coffi ns and hearses to choose from; including vintage cars, lorries and specially adapted vehicles including Land Rovers, VWs and even Hummers. There’s certainly something for everyone!
Perhaps the most unusual hearses though are the bike or trike hearses which feature specially adapted sidecars and which are sure to guarantee that the funeral procession is a local talking point.
Paul is always looking for ways to make the funeral wishes of his clients come true and has demonstrated this by arranging a spectacular exit for one lady whom, having spent most of her life fascinated with space, chose to have some of her ashes sent into orbit. Paul made all the arrangements necessary for his client through the aptly named ‘Heavens Above’ company.
4 Business Matters
Above: Paul Sullivan (right) lets Ian Pascall try out an aptly named model
defi nitely for him! Now in his 20th year in the industry he does not regret his decision saying: “It is the high level of job satisfaction and gratitude from families I have helped, which has kept me going. Sometimes it can be very stressful but I guess people are right when they say at least I will always have work!” He is determined to provide his clients with a wide range of services and will go the extra mile to meet his clients’ requirements, which is one of the reasons that he is one of only two Kent funeral directors listed in The Good Funeral Guide. Sullivan & Son are also recommended by the Natural Death Centre and are the funeral contractor to Dover District Council.
So whether you want to ‘go out with a bang’ or pass on peacefully it’s nice to know that when you’ve ‘got to go’ at least you have a wide choice of options with Sullivan & Son. In the meantime, however, don’t forget that we are always on hand to help with all the business advice you need.
