Know Your Association BITS AND PIECES

“The best thing to give to your enemy is forgiveness; to an opponent, tolerance; to a friend, your heart; to your child, a good example; to a father, deference; to your mother, conduct that will make her proud of you; to yourself, respect; to all men, charity.”

—Benjamin Franklin

Marines’ Memorial Theatre We have an opportunity to upgrade the Marines’ Memorial Theatre Theatre — with new sound and lighting equipment — to be a location-of-choice for the performing arts in San Francisco as well as a premier loca- tion for our educational programs, like the George P. Shultz Lecture Series. You can help by attending our “Best of the Best” Cabaret fundraiser on 30 April. You’ll definitely get your money’s worth, including a reception, a wonderful dinner and terrific entertainment.

32 Crossroads Spring 2012 The Club Lobby

We invite you to come view the five paintings and five sculptures from the collection of the very famous Marine art- ist, Colonel Charles Waterhouse. He has made a special donation to the Club for display. Colonel Waterhouse fought as a PFC on Iwo Jima. He was later assigned by the Marine Corps as the first Artist-in- Residence. He has produced hundreds of paintings documenting the history of the Marine Corps. Next time you are here, take a minute to look around. I know you will be pleased with the display. We are honored that Colonel Waterhouse chose our Club to display his works.

“After climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb.” —Nelson Mandela

Preserving our Environment as a Green Operation

We continue to work towards the goal of having the greenest operation in the City. We’ve installed an efficient climate con- trol system in the hotel rooms that turns off when the room in unoccupied. We have educated all of our employees about conserving energy. We’re replacing all of our commodes with low-flush models. We’re looking at all ways to reduce our use of water and the commensurate waste water. Next time you are here, you will notice the difference.

“Friendship is born at the moment when one person says to another, “What! You too? I thought I was the only one.” —C.S. Lewis

Our Reciprocal Clubs

We know you Members appreciate this benefit of membership. The most popular are the Army Navy Club in Washington, DC, located one block from the White

House, and The New York Athletic Club, located on Central Park South. Four of our Reciprocal Clubs are in New York City; 3 are in Washington, DC; 12 are in the UK; 1 is in Ireland; 7 are in Austra- lia; and 13 are in Canada. A significant number of these clubs were brought to our attention by Members. We thank them for helping us expand this program. Most of the Reciprocal Clubs are private clubs with dress codes. You can learn more at www.MarineClub.com/reciprocalclubs.php.

“Be a good listener. Your ears will never get you in trouble.” —Frank Tyger

Keeping the Marines’ Memorial Club an Attractive Place to Stay We invite you to visit us and check out our new beds, bed covers, pillows, and new, fluffier towels. Give us feedback on our housekeeping department. The house- keepers strive to keep our rooms cleaner and fresher than anywhere else. Internet access is free and very fast. The room safes will remain and, due to the demand, we’re keeping refrigerators in the rooms. Our fitness center is top-notch and, as guests, you can use it free of charge.

“Life is ten percent what happens to you and ninety percent how you respond to it.” —Lou Holtz

More Care Packages for the Troops in Afghanistan

We continue to ask for your donations to help us send care packages to our troops in Afghanistan. Every single dollar you donate goes directly to the project. We know the troops appreciate the TRX sus- pension trainers because it’s tough to stay in shape in some of the remote areas. This past mail-out included a healthy shipment of school supplies for the Marines to give to Afghan school children.
