Illuminating the public realm – the importance of public lighting Innovation and new technology
New developments in light sources, control systems and luminaires are occurring rapidly. The equipment used in a lighting installation affects the number of luminaires required, the ambience of the area being lit as well as the energy and carbon footprint
of the installation. Northampton market square*
Within the European Community legislation is being implemented which specifies efficiency and lifetime performance requirements on lamps, control gear and luminaires thus ensuring that only acceptable equipment is used. In addition we are seeing the introduction of new technologies such as LEDs which can provide energy reduction solutions.
However the user must review any new technology carefully; claims of savings made by suppliers must be assessed against the existing lighting inventory, maintenance requirements and operational profile. Costs can then be reviewed based upon a whole life costing approach, taking due account of capital, operational (energy, carbon, maintenance) and decommissioning costs.
The application of new technology is appropriate when it becomes affordable with an suitable positive payback period on investment.
