Baseline Lake, Pinckney, Michigan, USA
BASELINE LAKE, PINCKNEY, MICHIGAN, USA The Great Lakes are a collection of vast freshwater lakes in North America. Great-lake swimmers enjoy lake houses and inland beaches, and the water is so abundant the area is sometimes referred to as the ‘third coast’ – this region holds a fi ſt h of the world’s surface fresh water. Lake Pinckney is just one of many lakes to swim in. “It’s a beautiful lake
for a dip during the warmer months in Michigan,” says swimmer Mike Mellor. Pinckney has fi ve campsites, sandy beaches, and miles of trails. “To be fair, there are hundreds of lakes like this in Michigan,” says Mellor.
BLUE LAGOON, COMINO
Comino is an isolated island in the Maltese archipelago, bang in the middle of Malta and Gozo. The clear seas, fi sh, limestone cliff s, deep caves and underwater rock formations in this area make swimming along the coast (boat cover recommended) a great way to spend your days. Malta and Gozo are only 5km apart, making crossings possible, and Comino is a great island destination between them. The water in Malta can be so clear and blue that the occasional jellyfi sh 12ſt below is the only thing to give a sense of depth. Tuck some cash into your swimsuit, as ice creams are available once you make land.
Swimtrek (
swimtrek.com) make this part of their short escape in
Gozo. The lagoon itself has a white sand base and rich fi sh life: pack a picnic on a boat and stay for a day.
Llyn Gwynant, Wales, UK
LLYN GWYNANT, WALES, UK Llyn is Welsh for lake, and there are enough of them to keep wild swimmers busy for many summers. Gwynant has many things to recommend it, including a shore-side campsite, kayak hire, its proximity to Snowdon and child-friendly beaches. More-adventurous swimmers will want to swim the 800m across the lake to Elephant Rock.
CAMLOUGH LAKE, SOUTH ARMAGH, IRELAND There aren’t many records to break in open water, but Camlough holds one: the Guinness World Record for the Longest Open Water Relay swim. Over the course of a week 200 swimmers swam 680km. Camlough also holds the Crooked Triathlon and Water Festival, but the rest of the time it’s a quiet lake that at racts local summer swimmers, says Adrian MacGreevy.
