PASSIVE Embedded Antennas Enable

Many industries have added integrated wireless functionality into their everyday products and/or services thus making antennas an important part of life. While many may not realise it, people have come to be dependent so much on antennas that it is only natural to take them for granted. Avnet Abacus via a number of its supplier partners offers an array of high performance embedded antennas for diverse wireless applications for use in a variety of markets. Innovative antenna designs from the leading antenna designers and manufacturers have been applied to a wide range of wireless products ranging from mobile phones and gaming devices to femtocells, scanners and mobile TV. In addition, OEMs within the industrial, asset tracking and navigation sectors embed these antennas into their products. In one industrial application, a manufacturer of material test
equipment which utilises Eddy currents, increased the portability of their products by adding standard antennas. Eddy current inspection devices detect flaws in conductors (metals) using two probes. One probe induces an eddy current in the conductor while the second monitors the induced eddy current. Changes in these currents usually detect surface flaws in the conductor. Data is normally stored on the instrument for download to a laptop for software analysis. In this instance the manufacturer added WLAN-enabled standard antennas to their device to allow for real-time data collection and analysis. In another application, a manufacturer of vehicle transponders uses dual-band GSM antennas to track vehicle movement. In an attempt to develop global customers, quad- band GSM antennas were needed.
