scholarships or the 11-plus and others are exempt from formal exams based on entrance tests or music awards. Therefore, it is vital that a curriculum is provided that is stimulating and enriching for all. “The beauty of the Independent Curriculum (IC) is that it runs in tandem with the Common Entrance syllabi but is more rigorous at all levels, allowing us to extend pupils throughout the school. It is a very exciting development for us and it is wonderful to be part of a team of highly reputable, pioneering schools who are really moving forward academically,” says Mr Greenfield. Across the school, teachers have been working hard to implement the
curriculum developments. New classes such as ‘Head Master’s English’ have been introduced to ensure children possess a thorough grounding in English grammar as well as study skills lessons to identify individual learning styles and how to work and revise in the most effective manner. At all times, the aim is to equip pupils with the ability to think and learn independently. The head master feels the IC strikes a good balance between new and
traditional approaches to teaching and learning. “We want to provide an excellent academic education for all, but revamp the way in which we do so, making the most effective use of modern technology but having an eye on our traditions too,” he says.
