IN ASSOCIATION WITH Salisbury Cathedral School A global view at Hatherop Castle

Music at Pinewood

HATHEROP CASTLE School has achieved the International School Award. Administered by the British Council, the award is an accreditation scheme for curriculum-based international work in schools. The scheme provides recognition for teachers and their schools working to instill a global dimension into the learning experience of all children and young people. At Hatherop Castle a themed week that

involved learning about different countries around the world and a Eurovision song

contest, in which all the pupils from nursery to Prep 8 took part, were just two of the events which impressed the assessors. Their feedback stated: “The school clearly has an international ethos and the activities have had a positive impact on the staff and students.” Hatherop Castle has links to the

Ngwenya School in Swaziland, sending them clothing and educational materials. An open morning is being held on May

7. Contact the registrar for more details on 01285 750206.

MUSICIANS FROM Pinewood School enjoyed outstanding success at the Devizes Eisteddfod Festival, with pupils named as winners in the Ensemble, Woodwind and Individual String sections. One of our pupils also won the prestigious title of Festival Junior Musician Winner. Pupils also take part in the National Youth

Orchestra, Wind and String Sinfonias and the Youth Choir. Niki Bell, director of music, explains: “Children who show a high level of musicality and potential need to experience playing or singing with like-minded youngsters. T e auditions are often a nerve-racking time, but the experience and chance to perform at venues like the Royal Albert Hall, make it worthwhile and lots of fun.” It is not all high end at Pinewood however.

Rock band rehearsals and songs from the school play can often be heard drifting through the school, and plans are also afoot to extend the current music school.

King’s Bruton on Hazlegrove gets running shoes on for

charity close to PE teacher’s heart THE INAUGURAL Hazlegrove 12k Charity Run took place recently with an impressive group of 49 runners taking part, together with an additional 66 children, parents and grandparents taking part in the 2k Fun Run. It was a real family affair with a wonderful atmosphere and great camaraderie as the many supporters cheered the runners as they set off and as they all, eventually, arrived back. The run followed on from a dinner at Hazlegrove when rugby commentator Nigel Starmer-Smith spoke

about England rugby and regaled everyone with anecdotes from his own rugby career. The two events have raised a combined total

of over £2,400 – a tremendous contribution to the Julian Starmer-Smith Lymphoma Fund. They were inspired by PE staff member Matthew Bartlett who ran 58 miles in the London to Brighton race last year in aid of the charity, a fund close to his heart as Julian - Mr Bartlett’s cousin and Nigel’s son - died from T-Cell Lymphoma aged 19.

a sporting high KING’S BRUTON headed into the New Year in buoyant mood after a year of excellent academic and sporting results. With 340 pupils on the school roll, the highest since 2004, headmaster Ian Wilmshurst announced that Wellesley House (a girls’ boarding and day house) and Lyon House (a boys’ boarding and day house) will both be fully refurbished for the start of the 2012-2013 academic year. The Christmas term ended on a

high note with Ben Dudley, King’s new hockey coach, helping produce the school’s best ever girls’ hockey season. The 1st XI, the under 15A XI and the under 14A XI only lost three matches between them, while an under 16 indoor team were county champions and reached the regional semi-final.
