Get in the Zone for 2012

The NCGA’s championship department relies heavily on the participation of its member clubs to conduct qualifying for championships. Those who successfully qualify at their club advance to sectional qualifying with an opportunity to make the championship fi eld at a world-class venue.

W

hile clubs are not required to hold

such qualifi ers I would like everyone to know that as an active NCGA member who holds a membership at an NCGA club, you are eligible to participate in championships offered throughout the year. For example, the Zone

Program gives each regular club the opportunity to send one four-person team to a regional zone champion- ship where it will engage in a two-day competition at Poppy Hills GC and Quail Lodge Resort. Up to 30 clubs from a respective area vie for the top two positions who then return to Pebble Beach at the end of August to play one day at Poppy Hills and one day at Spy- glass Hill against the rest of the zone winners (28 teams in total) for the overall Zone Championship. Please be aware that your Zone may have changed during the off-season in an effort to realign each zone with an equal number of clubs. Check the course directory or ncga.org for your new zone. So the question then

becomes, “If my club does not conduct such qualifying,

can three of my buddies and I come to Pebble Beach to compete?” The answer is YES! So long as the four players in question are listed on their club’s member roster at the time of registration and your club does not plan on holding a qualifi er, you can assemble a team to come play Poppy Hills and Quail Lodge in a format that is the better two net balls of the four-person team. Entry forms are sent

to your club at the begin- ning of each year that list all the requirements and important deadline dates so please inquire with your club’s tournament chairman for more information, or contact the NCGA champi- onships and events depart- ment directly and we will be happy to further assist you. Keep in mind that this holds true for all of our events that require qualifying at the club level; your club offi cial will have entries for every event that you are eligible for.

Changes for 2012 This year will bring

about some changes that everyone should be aware of. First of all, we will expand championship fi eld

sizes to allow more people the opportunity to compete for a medal at an NCGA championship. We have expanded the exemption criteria for scratch events to include performances at USGA and CGA events as well as including those NCGA members that are in the top 500 of the World Amateur Golf Rankings (visit www.usga.org for more information on the WAGR List). One of the critical

changes for next year is in regard to the Player of the Year Points Program. Beginning in 2012, all

points awarded to outside events (those events not conducted by the NCGA) will be based solely on the number of players who par- ticipate. The breakdown of points can be found under the Championships Tab at ncga.org. We ask that you support your local events to help maximize the number of points available toward not only Player of the Year honors, but to be considered for an invitation to team events such as the Hanna- Wehrman Cup, the North/ South Challenge, Seaver Cup and more. Finally, I would like to
