TRANSPARENT INFORMATION, INFORMED DECISIONS

To enable clients to understand the effects of remediation processes, and evaluate cost and time implications versus wider environmental impacts, WSP has developed a set of tools and procedures for incorporating sustainability within our remediation programmes.

Sustainability is a material consideration and its application in remediation programmes is now supported by a range of guidance and frameworks prepared by the Sustainable Remediation Forums across the world.

We consider sustainability in:

ƒƒ Setting the remedial objectives within a framework of cost-benefit assessment

ƒƒ Designing the remediation works ƒƒ Monitoring and reporting the progress of the remediation works

ƒƒ Considering the case for remediation closure.

The remediation footprint takes into account carbon emissions, water intensity, and other sustainability indicators identified by the sustainability assessment.

The remediation footprint can then be compared with the pollution mass reduction achieved by the works, to establish the true costs and benefits of remediation and explore the case for closure or resetting of the remediation objectives.

As part of our commitment to provide transparent information on the environmental intensity of remediation projects, WSP Remediation, in collaboration with WSP Digital, have developed an on-line reporting tool, we call STREAM (Sustainability Tracker for Remediation and Environmental Application Management).

STREAM is a cloud-hosted simple-to-use environmental database for reporting of environmental intensity and sustainability metrics on remediation projects on a monthly basis.

We gather information on safety, health and environmental statistics, Scope 1, 2 and 3 carbon emissions (such as the impact of energy consuming processes and the environmental impact of waste disposal and associated transportation) and water intensity throughout the course of our remediation work (potable water use, groundwater abstracted, water disposal etc) to give our clients, regulators and stakeholders the information they need to make decisions on on-going remediation programmes in an easy to understand format.

This information is available on a project by project, client by client or business-wide basis.
