Award-winning healthcare at CH2M HILL B

ased in the US, CH2M HILL is a market- leading full-service provider of consulting, design, design-build, operations, and

program management on a global scale. Having won major contracts in multiple countries, the company’s global expatriate workforce has grown to over 500 from fewer than 100 in 2007. The company is developing a strong reputation and in 2011, for the third year running, was named one of the World's Most Ethical Companies by the Ethisphere Institute. In addition, with operations expanding to

increasingly challenging locations, the company was at risk of rising costs of medical evacuation. The company commissioned International SOS to

create a pre-assignment health assessment program. “Known health issues can lead to medical absence, business disruption and reduced productivity if not properly managed”, says Dr Myles Druckman, Vice President Medical Services, International SOS Americas.

A unique global medical risk methodology created by International SOS links country- and site-related medical risk to personal health risks. This is used to rapidly identify employees and dependents assigned to higher-risk locations with known significant personal health issues. Each participant completes an online questionnaire and at-risk individuals are

immediately identified for follow-up by a corporate nurse or medical director. Shelie Gustafson is CH2M HILL’s OneHR Global Delivery Director. “As a global firm, we want to make sure that our employees worldwide are safe— that includes providing a unique health assessment program that helps our globally mobile employees manage their medical risks”, she explains. During its first year, the program generated a critical intervention rate of 2.5%. With a sum of $50,000 put against each critical intervention, the program has demonstrated a very positive return on investment. Employees receive easy access to specific medical expertise. Meanwhile, managers have a tool to fulfill their duty of care, monitor health risks globally, and demonstrate a positive return on investment. In 2010 the program won a prestigious Expatriate Management and Mobility Award (EMMA) Award, as the best corporate communication portal. “By using this program, it helps us prevent undue stress and unnecessary medical-related expenses for our employees and the firm. It provides us with a greater level of comfort when mobilizing our staff, knowing that we’re proactively addressing any medical risks as a result of the health assessment process,” adds Shelie. ■
