The UK can teach the world a thing or two when it comes to education, as Lorraine Shah discovers
s knowledge-based industries become ever more important in the global economy, so too does the education and skills sector that they rely on to provide the highly educated workforce they need to survive and thrive. Education and training is an important component in virtually every industry and profession. This is good news for the UK’s world-class education, training and learning suppliers, who are well placed to meet the growing international demand for the type of products and services they offer. Richard Parry, head of UK Trade & Investment’s education and skills team, says: “The UK is a global leader in developing partnerships between education and business to match the skills that industry needs with the education and training the country provides. “UK education and skills exports are worth more than £14bn annually, making us a world leader in
A
meeting accelerating demand. Most countries seem to relate to the UK’s principles in education and fi nd our experience of great interest.”
EDUCATIONAL EXPERTISE The UK has an outstanding reputation for the provision of education and skills across the entire spectrum of the sector. Educational resources is a particularly successful area, encompassing products such as teaching aids, educational toys and bespoke ICT systems for schools, colleges and universities and including those geared towards children and adults with special educational needs. Each year, UK Trade & Investment demonstrates the breadth and quality of what the country has to offer to overseas buyers by bringing them to trade shows such as the BETT education technology exhibition and The Education Show in Birmingham, held in March.
The UK is also a leader in educational publishing, consistently producing learning materials which engage students, support teachers and deliver high-quality successful learning. Key players include Pearson, widely considered to be the world’s leading educational publisher, and Cambridge and Oxford University Press, which are both active globally. UK educational publishing exports include books on English-language training – another major area of UK expertise. For millions of people, the UK is the natural choice for English-language learning, with courses available both to students at home and through British institutions globally.
Such success is exemplifi ed by Linguaphone Group, which has recently signed an exclusive agreement with the Malaysian Melewar Group to deliver English-language training in corporate and retail markets across Malaysia, India and Singapore.
