which affects per-pupil funding so the charitable status pays for what the Department for Education does not cover,” Mr Murrell said. “In the first term we had interactive whiteboards and laptops installed and found some money to fund a part-time caretaker – something that was previously done by volunteers. “We employ qualified teachers which I think is important but we also


have a healthy group of volunteers to help with the day-to-day running and people from the community come in to share their expertise and experiences with the children so they get a wide range of opportunities. “One of the experiences that is different from running a maintained


school is having the freedom to shop around for services and not be tied to the local authority, so you can seek best value and quality for your money. We also have some flexibility with the curriculum and offer a mix between the national curriculum and the international primary curriculum.” If there are any challenges for new free schools it is that they are the


pioneers for those who will come later. “I suppose because we were in the first tranche of schools everything was new and we were pathfinders for the process, but I think this will improve as more schools go down this route,” Mr Murrell added. “The process is extremely time-consuming because of the procedures


involved. You have to set out your ethos, how the school will be organised and what you are working to achieve. But the benefit of this process for a school like this is that it allows you to think about and focus on the job in hand.” Natalie Evans, chief operating officer of the New Schools Network,


said the rules governing the setting up of free schools have changed – or evolved – since the first schools were approved. The deadline to submit applications for opening in 2013 is February 24. “The process has become tougher,” she said. “When it was started it


was a new process but following a significant number of applications it was realised that more information was required from schools in the
