Kerri Chandler delivers a marathon seven-hour set at Newcastle’s bastion of deep house, Jaunt…
JAUNT, COSMIC BALLROOM, NEWCASTLE
PASSING through the smoky confi nes of Newcastle’s fi ttingly titled Cosmic Ballroom on this Friday night, the melodic chimes fi lling the nebulous room can only mean one thing: NY master Kerri Chandler is already in the house.
Kicking off his seven-hour marathon promptly at 10pm, there’s no excuse for the Jaunt faithful not to turn up early and the place is rammed as a result. Easing in slowing with the more vintage-sounding of his stock, we notice the dulcet bounce of ‘My Moody Life’ (Mad House 2011), with its jazzed out piano melody, wriggling its way into our ear from the wholesome soundsystem as the fl oor edges further into its groove.
Dirtying things up with Jamie Jones’ juicy redux of ‘Hungry For The Power’, and later with Franco Cinelli’s pulsing midnight re- imagination of Cassius’ ‘The Sound of Violence’, it’s clear his fi rst summer at DC10 as a Circoloco resident has paid off, much to the delight of the amorous collective.
But the real pièce de résistance does not come until much later, a good hour after ‘closing time’, when Kerri puts his pair of Nikes on his hands to scratch up and drop Bucketheads ‘The Bomb’ to a rapturous chorus of cheers and whistles. Quite literally booting off!
