that environment. Language schools are great for more independent students that have graduated from college or want a short-term summer experience, ” observed Olds.

Ensuring Success

According to Swift, North American students have had much more access to studying romance languages like French and Spanish, both of which are commonly taught in the public school system, than Asian dialects.

“This makes it difficult for Americans to plant early roots in these languages,” he said.

Despite this setback, students continue to be drawn to the languages, though the task of becoming fluent requires a steady stream of motivation and commitment. Using Japanese and Korean as a jumping-off point to explore other interests is a great motivator.

“If your only goal is to become fluent in Japanese, the learning can seem like an endless slog,” said Kirby. “If you enjoy electronics, for example, then you have a real motivation to read gadgetry news in Japanese, and you find yourself learning related words almost unconsciously.”

Both Japanese and Korean pose their own respective learning challenges.

“The Korean alphabet can be quickly learned,” said Karen Snell, a senior at the University of California, Berkley. “This makes for nearly instant reading ability in that language.” The Korean accent, however, is more difficult to imitate and master (for a native English speaker) than Japanese, she added. Conversely, Japanese can be extremely demanding to learn to read, impeding true fluency.

Ultimately, the most successful students take their academic experience seriously while making full use of everything a new environment and culture offers. Despite reputations of difficulty, the potential for learning Korean and Japanese is limited only by one’s attitude, realism, determination and, of course, time.
