“As Japanese schools live or die


entirely on the strength of their Japanese programme, they are very focused on the specifi c goals of that program. Universities, on the other hand, can offer a much wider range of programs and facilities, and of course a large community of Japanese students to interact with,” said Evan Kirby of the Genki Japanese and Culture School in Fukuoka City.


The number of students choosing to study abroad in South Korea has also increased rapidly in recent years through aggressive recruitment and scholarship programs aimed at international students. As the only divided country in the world, South Korea plays an important role economically, diplomatically and strategically among China, Russia, Japan and the United States. Though a deterrent to some students, the political situation between North and South Korea may make Korean language skills even more marketable, particularly within East Asia, in the future.

Like Japan, South Korea offers a variety of choices for students at universities and private schools. Yonsei, Ewha, and Seoul National University, to name a few, all have multi-level programs for international students. Studying at a university gives individuals more opportunities for interaction with local students and the community.


“Participants enrolled at the University in Korea, for example, can combine language classes with other cultural or area studies classes taught in English for better overall learning of the language, country and culture,” said Swift.


Private institutes, or hagwons, offer


Korean language programs with smaller class sizes; they are a good option for students who lack the time or fi nancial means to attend a university program full-time.
