Ireland’s Shannon Region has been carved by nature itself and its dramatic Atlantic coast-line and unspoilt greenery is the perfect setting for superb golf courses.

C

the soul. Each of the more than 30 or so golf courses offers the amateur and professional alike a special challenge. The Championship Links at Doonbeg has a justifi able international reputation for its breathtaking views and great greens. The Greg Norman designed course is without doubt one of the most visually stunning. Set on the Clare coast near the world heritage site of the Cliffs of Moher, its massive dunes stretch along a crescent shaped beach, and the rolling Atlantic breakers are visible from each hole. Play a round at the championship Adare Manor Hotel & Golf Resort with its Robert Trent Snr designed fairways and natural water traps. These tree-lined courses offer a rich and enjoyable experience and very good value for money. Playing here the golfer can experience fi rst-hand,

the beauty of the landscape. The Burren is a magical area of limestone rock, covering majestic mountains, and tranquil valleys with gently meandering streams. It holds a special place for Irish people and exudes a real sense of peace and spirituality. It holds a rich array of fl ora and wildlife, and (refl ecting its prehistoric origins), it has megalithic tombs and monuments older than Egypt’s pyramids. At the heart of the region is Limerick. An historic

city, it offers visitors all the hustle and bustle of a large metropolis but with the easy friendliness of a small country town. Here there are shops, award- winning restaurants and luxurious hotels to suit all tastes and budgets. It’s a great region to explore either by car, bicycle

or even boat. Many people take the opportunity to take a few days out on a Shannon cruiser, where the days slip lazily by. Start the day with a round of golf, followed by a leisurely lunch at a local restaurant or bar. In the afternoon grab a rod and line and relax with a spot of fi shing. In many hotels the chef is more than happy to cook what you catch for your evening meal or even breakfast. End the evening at a waterside bar making some lifelong memories and friendships.
