E-PRESCRIBING

Beki Ruban, director of Oasis OneView, discusses how a more agile approach to delivering a fully integrated EPR may best meet the needs of a changing NHS.

T

he choice of an electronic patient re- cord (EPR), whilst never easy, is in-

creasingly important for the NHS. Against the backdrop of a failing national IT pro- gramme that promised much but delivered little, the need for choice, value for money and innovative ways to deliver an end-to- end record is essential.

With changes in the provision of services to a pluralistic environment where the baton of care needs to pass safely and ef- ficiently across organisational and profes- sional boundaries, there is a clear need to build an EPR comprehensive and creative enough to manage the care continuum.

Whilst tradition dictates that an EPR is the domain of a single supplier, reality has proven that finding a supplier who can provide that vision is difficult. Very few, if any, recent EPR procurements have deliv- ered on their promises. The proof of the pudding has, sadly, not been in the eating.

The luxury of a single organisation invest- ing significant monies in a ‘one size fits all’ EPR solution is available to only the few. Alternatives need to be available to in- crease choice and provide for a dynamic, diverse healthcare system.

Thus many trusts are exploring alternative ways to deliver an EPR which allows them to exploit their existing estate, prioritise requirements, and realise early benefits to protect their investment in a fully integrat- ed yet agile environment.

Oasis OneView is such an approach.

OneView, whose foundation is the indus- trial-strength Oasis patient administration system (PAS), provides seamless integra- tion between the Oasis PAS and other existing, best of breed and interoperable applications, delivering a simple to use, integrated EPR. Clients themselves choose the speed, scale and scope of deployment and Oasis provide the delivery.

From the Oasis PAS, to functionality from OneView partners such as Noemalife, Bluespier, Orion and others, the OneView approach provides a comprehensive suite

which includes prescribing, outpatient management, inpatient management, whiteboards, management information systems, theatres management, discharge management, clinical and administrative correspondence, specialty management, PACS / radiology information systems, laboratory

information management

systems and productivity solutions such as digital pens, kiosks, digital and voice dictation and mobile technologies.

The proven solutions presented through the Orion portal, seamlessly linked by the Rhapsody Integration Engine, can be im- plemented in an affordable and planned way, providing resilience, scalability and robust performance to meet any organisa- tion’s needs.

Whilst not an entirely new approach, the prospect of increased choice and a move away from a monolithic strategy should en- able organisations to implement an EPR to meet their ever-changing needs.

And the need is there.

Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust recently signed a 10-year contract to imple- ment the OneView EPR across their health- care environment.

Trust director of ICT John Thornbury says:

“We need the best possible system to sup- port the best possible care for our patients. But we do not believe that all the best af- fordable ideas come from a single supplier. We want to share responsibility for how our EPR is brought together. We rely on Oasis today and we are happy to rely on them and their extended family of partner companies going forward.”

The change is happening. The prospect of long-term strategic partnerships between suppliers and the NHS is becoming a real- ity.

So will the OneView approach work? Will the supplier market rise to the challenge of the new NHS market, working in partner- ship with each other and the NHS to finally realise the benefits of an integrated EPR?

We think so.

As the NHS IT market changes and as the demands of financial and operational chal- lenges start to ‘bite’, this new approach will be OneView to watch.

The proof of the pudding is in the eating. But maybe choosing what and how you eat it will prove to be the most appetising.
