Youssou N’Dour is to put his music career on hold in the new year and enter Senegalese politics, promising to be on the side of the Senegalese ‘have nots’. As well as
being by far the country’s most popular musician, N’Dour is also a successful entrepreneur who owns a TV station and newspaper which have previously come under pressure from incumbent President Abdoulaye Wade. Wade’s second elected term ends in February 2012 and although at press date N’Dour had not yet declared himself to be a presidential candidate, his entrance to the political arena with his Fecce Maci Boolé (Wolof for ‘I Am Involved’) social consciousness movement has been greeted with wild excitement.

The British Council appear to be bringing music back into focus in their project work. The Council and PRS For Music Foundation have embarked on projects with four UK musicians to spend six weeks in China writing new music and building new international relationships. Amongst them, Welsh folk multi- instrumentalist Gareth Bonello will travel to Chengdu, the capital of the Sichuan province, to take part in a residency programme designed to enable innovative British musicians to explore new musical territory, reach new audiences and write new material in the context of a changing international market. Recently, Sam Lee & The Gillie Boys performed alongside Dr. El Fatih Hussein band and traditional Darfurian singer Omer Ihsas at Khartoum International Music Festival.
