IT took as a while to get the pun in the title of Surkin’s debut album ‘USA’ (out now) but when we did we felt very pleased with ourselves. It’s been a while since the Parisian DJ and producer released the old school piano euphoria of ‘White Knight Two’ and while he certainly hasn’t been prolifi c since each release has been essential, combining Daft Punk’s Chicago obsession (think Dance Mania and disco samples) with the ravier, nosier edge of Ed Banger. On top of that Marble Players, the super-group he formed with Bobmo and Para One,
continues to lead the way musically for even younger crews such as Young Gunz. ‘USA’ plunders plenty of 80s sounds, heaps them in with the aforementioned infl uences, and includes brilliant recent single ‘Ultra Light’, which was a DJmag Killer, so check it out. Likewise, give his chart a whirl and you’ll fi nd everything from the classic Northern bleep of LFO to Sam Tiba’s distinctly French take on hyphy- house. ‘Formidable!’ as our European neighbours might say.
