Become a school rep!

The NUT prides itself on having members in virtually every school in Wales. And in most of those schools there is a teacher who is a school rep, recruiting new members, advising members, promoting NUT policy and linking with local divisions/associations and the NUT Cymru office.

But we want more reps. Wales Secretary David Evans said: “We’re still recruiting new school reps. The pensions campaign has highlighted how important the rep’s role is, and how vital it is to have an NUT rep in every school in Wales.”

NUT Cymru staff ensure that reps are given every support so they can comfortably fulfill their role. They get free training on handling their duties.

The next courses are:

• 8 November: Level 1 Part 2 at Cardiff City Stadium; and

• 10 November: Level 1 Part 1 at Llety Parc Hotel, Aberystwyth.

If you’re interested in becoming a school rep and attending one of these courses, contact Lisa Tavener at NUT Cymru on 029 2049 1818.

For more information on becoming a rep, or playing a part in the NUT in other ways, visit www.teachers.org.uk/getinvolved.

Hello…

A warm welcome to new NUT Cymru Policy Officer Owen Hathway (pictured top), who previously worked for Plaid Cymru in the Welsh Assembly, and to Paul Bedford, who teaches at Penyrheol Comprehensive School in Swansea. He’s been elected as Swansea division secretary following the retirement of Steffan ap Dafydd.

… and goodbye

Steffan ap Dafydd and Mal Davies from Pontypool were recently honoured at a dinner in north Wales for their long service to the NUT. Mal received an OBE in this year’s Queen’s birthday honours list.

The event also remembered the life of Jack McLean, the son of Denbighshire division secretary Liz McLean, who died earlier this year.
