The firstmajor survey of the six crucial but little-known years in the early career of Josef Herman as hemade his own ‘forced journey’ across Europe against the backdrop ofwar. Between 1938 and 1940 he fled firstWarsaw, then Brussels before finding refuge in Glasgow (1940-43) and briefly London (1943-44) then settling in SouthWales. This exhibition not only uncovers Herman’s artistic response to this turbulent experience, but also reveals his early engagementwith expressionismand colour, whichwas at its height during this period, and, though hardly recognised today, contributed distinctly to themaking of themature artist.
