tion, Greater Austin Chamber of Com- merce, Travis County Medical Society, LiveSTRONG Foundation, Austin May- or Lee Leffingwell, and Travis County Judge Sam Biscoe. In the past couple of years, UT South-
western and Seton collaborated to ex- pand medical research and training in Austin. And, UT System Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa, MD, said he wants to expand the program so that students could spend all four years of medical school here. Senator Watson described his pro-
posal as “one of those economic devel- opment opportunities that enhances our economy in ways we cannot even fath- om right now, but that also enhances our quality of living.” Whether the Texas Legislature will
go along with Senator Watson’s plan is unknown. The state already has spent millions of dollars on an emerging med- ical school in Round Rock operated by Texas A&M Health Science Center. The UT System Board of Regents also has not directly addressed the issue, although it unanimously endorsed Dr. Cigarroa’s recommendation to expand medical training in Austin. The Texas Higher Education Coor-
dinating Board also must approve the medical school plan. Texas Medical Association policy sup-
ports new medical schools in Texas and expansion of existing medical schools, but the association does not take a posi- tion on where new campuses should be located.
health will far outweigh the near-term savings offered by President Obama’s deficit-reduction plan,” said AAMC President and CEO Darrell G. Kirch, MD. “By forcing drastic cuts to Medicare and Medicaid, this proposal will hurt ben- eficiaries, exacerbate the already critical shortage of doctors in this country, and cost tens of thousands of jobs that Amer- ica can’t afford to lose.” President Obama’s proposal includes
higher premiums and deductibles for many Medicare beneficiaries and lower Medicare payments to teaching hospitals and rural hospitals. The plan would cut $248 billion from the projected growth of Medicare in the next 10 years, while shaving $72 billion from Medicaid and other health programs. The proposals are part of a package to
reduce deficits by more than $3 trillion over 10 years. Dr. Kirch says funding cuts focused
disproportionately on teaching hospi- tals will worsen critical shortages of health care professionals at a time when another 32 million Americans will be entering the system as a benefit of the president’s own health care reform legis- lation. “Such cuts would mean that up to 10,000 fewer physicians will be trained every year when the nation already faces a shortage of over 90,000 doctors in the next 10 years,” he said. n
